A septic system is a self-contained treatment setup: a tank that separates solids from wastewater, and a drain field that disperses the treated water back into the soil. Unlike a sewer connection, a septic system needs its owner to actively manage it — there’s no utility monitoring it for you — which is why regular pumping and inspection matter more here than on a sewer-connected property.

As a general rule, a residential septic tank needs pumping every 3–5 years depending on household size and tank capacity — waiting until a problem shows up usually means the drain field has already started absorbing more solids than it should, which is a more expensive fix than pumping on schedule would have been.
